Jordie Struck

7. Create an English persona.

My name is Jordie Struck, but when I speak in French, I like to think of myself as Jean-François Rousseau. He was an alternate Québecois persona I created in my teens. Jordie did not speak very well in French, but JF was a native speaker. It may seem silly, but it’s just a bit of fun. And isn’t language supposed to be fun? Isn’t that a big part of communicating in another language? Language is not just communication, it is also cultural. If you adopt a persona in that language, it may be just the right thing to help you embody the language and feel more capable. Also, you can pronounce words with the same vigour and precision your persona would. I have had quite a few students who have had great success with this technique. I suggest trying it at a party or with friends. There’s no reason to hide the fact that you are roleplaying; tell the English speakers you’re with that you’ve created a persona and you’re trying it out. They’ll probably get a kick out of it. Maybe you can help them create a persona in your own language. Language and culture are about sharing. Now get out there have fun with your English!
